Why Sustainable Consulting Portugal is the Future of Construction: A Personal Journey to a Healthier Built Environment

Behind Clinic Doors: The Beginning of an Unexpected Journey

Sustainable consulting portugal? My odyssey didn’t start in an architectural firm or on a construction site. It began in the silent, often overlooked corners of specialized clinics for the environmentally ill. It was there that I met people who shared more than just a diagnosis: they had lost their quality of life, trapped in bodies that reacted with unbearable symptoms to the modern world around them. These patients suffered from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), a condition triggered by everyday substances like perfumes, cleaning agents, or the off-gassing from building materials. I saw firsthand how these invisible threats in the air were destroying the health of people who once led normal lives.

The most frustrating moment was observing how patients, after a successful treatment in the clinic, would return to their homes—only to fall ill again. Their apartments and workplaces, the very places where they were supposed to recover, were the actual sources of their sickness. I realized that as humans, we cannot truly heal if our living environment is systematically making us sick. At that moment, I knew my mission had to be to close the gap between medical healing and a healthy living environment. I understood that this wasn’t just about building, but about creating quality of life. And this mission would lead me on a long journey that would ultimately end in Portugal, to open a new chapter in sustainable consulting portugal.

From the Sickbed to Building Biology: Education as a Stepping Stone

Even while working in the clinic, I enrolled in a training program to become a certified Building Biologist at the IBN (Institut für Baubiologie und Nachhaltigkeit). I absorbed the knowledge like a sponge. Every detail, from material science to measuring electromagnetic smog, fascinated me. I wanted to understand how to design buildings that were not only sustainable but, most importantly, healthy. This education provided the theoretical foundation, but I knew that theory alone wasn’t enough. To offer effective sustainable consulting portugal, I had to get to know the industry from the inside out. I needed to understand how the gears of the real estate sector truly turned, what motivates developers, and what obstacles lie on the path to a healthy building.

The World of Developers and Brokers: A Look Behind the Scenes

My next step was to enter the world of pre-fabricated home sales. Here, I learned what drives builders, what they value, how financing works, and how to approach everything from planning to material selection. This step was crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of clients’ needs and concerns. It was the ideal preparation for my future sustainable consulting portugal. After gaining a broad overview, I moved to a regional developer specializing in multi-family homes. I delved deep into project development. I was involved from the very beginning, planning plots with architects and contributing to the creation of living spaces. The close contact with the future residents was extremely important to me. I was able to incorporate my expertise as a Building Biologist into the planning, ensuring that the projects were not only sustainable but also created healthy living environments. However, even here, I recognized the limitations.

Since the majority of the housing stock consists of older buildings, I was drawn to traditional real estate brokerage. Here, I could directly apply my knowledge as a Building Biologist during property valuations. However, within the large brokerage firm, it was not possible to plan plots or work closely with developers. The traditional brokerage world was too rigid for my vision of sustainable consulting portugal. Fortunately, an opportunity arose within the company group. A new subsidiary, specializing in these very topics, was founded. I made the switch and could now officially work with developers, architects, private and institutional investors, and family offices. I took over the acquisition of planned or under-construction properties and was able to influence the emerging living spaces here and there. In doing so, I learned about a wide range of approaches and construction techniques that often reflected very different needs: whether it was affordable housing with small rooms built without steel reinforcement or the optimal use of space through car-sharing parking spots. I saw how decentralized ventilation systems were preferred and how clay building blocks were now permitted up to building class 3.

A Seismic Shift in the Industry and the Opportunity in Portugal

It was an exciting time of industry development. But that changed abruptly. Overnight, the real estate sector was shaken by geopolitical and economic shocks: the end of subsidies, the war in Ukraine, and soaring interest rates. A shockwave went through the industry, from which it has not yet recovered. Predictability became impossible. In this chaos, I realized that my mission could not be built on such an unstable market. So, I used the time to dedicate myself to studying to become a certified real estate specialist and closely observing the European market.

My gaze fell upon Portugal. I saw a dynamic and active real estate market, but I also recognized a weakness: digital nomads had artificially driven up prices, making it difficult for locals to find affordable housing. Nevertheless, the market offered an unbeatable foundation that Germany lacked: quality of life. The unique culture, open society, and breathtaking landscape created an environment where people wanted to live healthy and happy lives. But the topic of healthy living was still unknown here. The focus was on ESG requirements and a bit of greenwashing, rather than putting the health of people at the center.

The Mission: Revolutionizing Sustainable Consulting Portugal

This was my moment. My journey through the real estate industry had shown me that it is possible to create healthy living spaces with a manageable effort. All my knowledge, from building biology to project development and marketing, culminated in one clear mission: to elevate sustainable consulting portugal to the next level. The lessons I had learned from MCS patients, the insights from selling prefabricated homes, the experience with developers and brokers—all of this led me to this one realization: Portugal needs a new kind of consulting. One that not only protects the environment but, above all, the people.

I see the untapped potential in Portugal, from traditional construction techniques that regulate the climate naturally to the use of local, uncontaminated materials. My goal is to combine these aspects with modern insights from Building Biology to create properties that are not only beautiful and energy-efficient but also serve as places of healing and well-being. That is the crucial difference. Your competition focuses on “sustainable,” I focus on “healthy.” That is the decisive advantage you cannot afford to miss.
